Small Business Adviser

I have four decades experience of running small businesses in various sectors including computers, publishing, swimming pools, travel and commercial property. My strategy was to find companies which had run down as the owner approached retirement, build them back up over the course of a few years and dispose of them.

I am cursed with the drive always to want to try something new

In every company I owned I was solely responsible for all aspects of marketing and building sales. I learned the hard way. I wasted loads of money hiring marketing ‘consultants’ who charged me for learning about my business and then telling me things I already knew.

I took a sabbatical year to do a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) which enabled me to go into consultancy myself. I specialised in providing down-to-earth commonsense guidance derived from my own small business experience.

I have some skill in advising on the production of effective sales material – both printed and digital. My focus was on producing eye-catching headlines – examples of which appear in my book Marketing Makeover – together with succinct, forceful body copy.

I plan to release new small business blogs on all these themes so sign up and I’ll make sure you get them as they appear. It’s FREE!

Written especially for owners and managers of small businesses Marketing Makeover presents a practical, down-to-earth methodology for building sales by taking a back-to-basics look at marketing.
It explains the vital importance of aligning products and services with customer needs and wants.
The book reviews the main marketing channels and how to plan a marketing campaign around them, then, with many humorous examples of eye-catching headlines, it explores the production of effective sales material with important guidance on keywords, headlines and body copy.
There is a separate chapter on writing for websites that looks at the issues of searchability, initial impact of the landing page and navigability.

This is an easily read book with practical ideas based on the author's four decades of running and building small businesses.
